"Quench Thou the fires of hate and strife,
The wasting fever of the heart."
A beautiful traditional Catholic prayer for peace, protection, and freedom from hatred, presented on a durable, wallet-sized prayer card.
This Pocket PrayerFulls™ card features verses from a Breviary hymn by St. John Henry Newman, preserved in Rev. F. X. Lasance's Blessed Sacrament Book (1913).
The front displays a dramatic, fiery red-orange sky at sunset, accompanied by the prayer's memorable words: "Quench Thou the Fires of Hate and Strife." The reverse contains the complete hymn verses, asking God to calm the passions of the heart, guard us from life's perils, and impart His peace to our souls.
At once a prayer for personal peace and a plea for deliverance from hatred and conflict, these beautiful verses are especially meaningful in troubled times.
THE PRAYER
O God, Who canst not change nor fail,
Guiding the hours as they roll by,
Brightening with beams
the morning pale
And burning in the mid-day sky;
Quench Thou the fires
of hate and strife,
The wasting fever of the heart,
From perils guard our feeble life,
And to our souls Thy peace impart.
Grant this, O Father, only Son,
And Holy Spirit, God of grace,
To whom all glory, three in one,
Be given in every time and place.
Amen.

A PRAYER FOR PEACE
These verses come from the Catholic tradition of praying throughout the day, offering each passing hour to God.
The hymn begins by acknowledging God's unchanging nature amid the passing hours. It then turns to a heartfelt petition: that God would quench hatred and strife, guard our lives from danger, and bring peace to our souls.
Its concluding verse glorifies the Holy Trinity-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The prayer is particularly fitting for moments of anger, anxiety, conflict, or uncertainty, when we seek to turn our hearts away from turmoil and toward the peace of God.
